How to Charge Your New Energy Vehicle for Longer Battery LifeBelieve it or not, many new energy vehicle (NEV) owners know that the battery not only affects the car's range but also its lifespan. After all, the cost of replacing a battery is enough to buy a new car. So, many owners are wondering how to charge their cars to make the battery last longer. Below, we'll teach you how to charge your NEV to make the battery more durable.

How to prolong the lifespan of new energy vehicle batteries?

Before discussing how to charge, let's first understand the battery. Currently, the main types of batteries used in NEVs are ternary lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Ternary lithium batteries have advantages such as high energy density, high charging efficiency, and good low-temperature tolerance. On the other hand, LFP batteries have advantages such as low cost, long life, high safety, and good high-temperature tolerance.

Many owners have heard that new cars need to activate the battery by undergoing three full charge-discharge cycles of over 12 hours. However, owners don't need to do this because the battery has already completed these processes before leaving the factory.

If you want a longer battery life, it's recommended to keep the battery charge level between 20% and 90%. Additionally, when the car's charge level drops to around 20%-35%, you should look for a charging station to charge the car. Don't wait until the battery is very low to find a charging station, as this can harm the battery and cause anxiety about finding a station.

Moreover, if you're not chasing extreme range, when using a DC fast-charging station, you can set a charging limit in advance to ensure it doesn't exceed 90%, avoiding overcharging and damaging the battery.

However, whether it's a ternary lithium battery or an LFP battery, when charging an NEV, there are three things to note: 1) Avoid charging in high-temperature conditions. Before charging on a hot day, turn off the car for ten minutes to let the battery cool down. 2) Even if the car isn't used for a long time, it's important to charge it regularly to maintain the battery's good condition. 3) If possible, prioritize slow charging. If conditions allow, you can combine fast charging for top-ups.
